My name is Caryma, a.k.a. @carymarules
I am a Toronto-based lawyer and entrepreneur.
My advocacy focuses primarily on housing, cannabis, and criminal law. I am also active on issues relating to politics, access to justice, poverty, racism, and the legal profession. I have been documenting COVID-denialism since 2021.
This website is a compilation of the coolest aspects of my work. The comics collection features art and commentary about current issues. The media page is a selection of my television, newspaper, radio, podcast, and magazine appearances. I answer some commonly asked questions here.
The moniker @carymarules came about as my Twitter handle. I like the ambiguity of the word “rules”: Am I providing a set of directives, or hyping myself up?
My CV is pretty neat
I practice law full-time at my own firm.
I regularly provide media commentary about contemporary issues in law and policy.
I am the co-founder of 420 Cannabis Court, a pop-up outdoor comedy venue created to support standup comedians during COVID-19.
I am part of the Board of Advisors at Legal Line, a federal not-for-profit organization since 1993 that provides free legal information about a wide range of subjects.
I am a college instructor. I developed the course Cannabis Law & Ethics from scratch.
I am a past Executive Director at NORML Canada, a federal not-for-profit public interest group chartered in Canada since 1978 that lobbies for fair, equitable, and sensible cannabis law and policy.
I am the recipient of a Clawbie 2019 in the “Best Innovative Projects” category for demonstrating “creativity and outside-the-box thinking in a notoriously risk-averse profession.” My award-winning Landlord & Tenant 101 Comic Series is available in French and Spanish.
I am a proud member of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, the voice of the criminal defence bar.
I am a professional wrestling fan and enthusiast.
I have two black office cats, Zuko and Xena— the advocats.
