Burn It Down
ICYMI @supriyadwivedi just quit her cool-as-heck six-figure job, during a pandemic, without anything lined up because of vitriol from online trolls. She endured obscene levels of harassment, including threats targeting her baby daughter. At some point, enough is enough.
Per Howard Levitt: If [Supriya] wishes to leave her role because she finds views dramatically different than her own to be antithetical to her continued employment, or cannot tolerate the trolls of social media, then she does not belong in talk radio as practiced in North America.
(Yes, *that* Howard Levitt.)
We can’t accept that harassment is “just part of the job”, especially since the brunt of harassment is borne by women (above all women of colour). Any strides made towards diversifying newsrooms are meaningless if the journalists are left exposed to unmitigated hate & violence.
Oh, and none of this matters at all if the people in positions of power don’t make room for diverse stories and perspectives. Representation is more than just looks, and in any event won’t save us from structural problems.
