Reasonable Limits
On the 39th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Doug Ford expanded law enforcement powers to enforce the stay-at-home order. Police can stop anyone in public, ask for ID, and issue a ticket if the individual is deemed non-compliant with O. Reg 265/21.
Several forces have indicated they don’t intend to use these powers, but that remains to be seen. Historically, police discretion is rarely (almost never) exercised in favour of marginalized groups. Police discretion is a funny thing.
What’s frustrating is the provincial government’s refusal to take steps that will meaningfully curb the spread of COVID-19. For example, offering social supports to essential workers who are most vulnerable to getting sick.
Instead, the chosen course of action confirms anti-maskers’ legitimate fears and fanciful delusions. There’s been a complete breakdown in public trust.
Over a year into this mess and our so-called leaders haven’t learned that WE CAN’T POLICE OUR WAY OUT OF A PANDEMIC.
